The Deputy Principal Clerk of Session is responsible to the Principal Clerk of Session and Justiciary and supports the service provided to the Lord President of the Court of Session by administering

  • The Offices of the Court of Session, which is the interface between the customer, the Court and the place where official court documents and applications are filed; and
  • The Office of the Keeper of the Rolls, which manages the diary of the Court and sets aside blocks of time for the hearing of different categories of court business and assigns the dates of hearing in civil cases.

They are assisted in the administration of the Offices of Court by a Depute Clerk of Session who has overall responsibility on a day to day basis for their management. They are similarly supported by the Keeper of the Rolls who is responsible for the day to day functions of that office. More information on these respective areas of responsibility is detailed below.

The Offices of Court (Gerneral, Petitions, Inner House and Extracts Departments and Court Motions Team) are supervised by a Senior Assistant Clerk of Session.

The main duties of the post are:-

  • Overall management responsibility for the departments on a daily basis;
  • Providing administration support to the Deputy Principal Clerk of Session;
  • Training and development of staff to ensure the smooth running of the department;

Other duties include supervising and providing guidance on technical aspects of work, checking maintenance orders, requests for enforcement of judgments of "foreign" Courts, and investigating complaints from customers.
